01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Kinako with brown sugar, Edo miso with sansho, wasabi with raspberry: BROWN TABBY’s financiers invite a little browsing among their Japanese-inspired pairings. There are familiar options, too, including plain, chocolate and Earl Grey. You could start with a classic, then try a more unexpected flavour and compare.
Visitors have described the freshly baked financiers as crisp on the outside and moist within, with a memorable buttery flavour. One person who chose sansho and raspberry enjoyed how the berry’s chocolate-like notes gave way to a delicate trace of sansho. Kinako with brown sugar and black sesame with wasanbon offer more familiar pairings, while wasabi with raspberry takes a less expected turn. Choose a flavour that catches your eye alongside a classic baked treat, and the contrast is easy to appreciate.
The madeleines have their own distinctive combinations, including soy sauce with caramel and Dassai with ginger. One diner remembered the balance of savouriness and gentle bitterness in the soy sauce and caramel madeleine; another found the ginger flavour in the Dassai and ginger version pronounced.
You can also enjoy a drink and something baked in the shop. A visitor who had iced coffee with lemon cake said the cake’s pronounced sweet-and-sour icing paired well with the coffee. Specialty coffee and espresso are also mentioned, making this a place to pause over one treat or choose a few to take away.
The cat-shaped financier, moulded as a view of a cat from behind, has also been a reason for people to stop by. Its distinctive appearance may appeal if you are choosing a small gift or simply want a treat that looks as good as it tastes. The Kamezawa shop has seating for eating in. It is closed on Mondays and open Tuesday to Sunday from 11 to 19.
